Location Key Region
Mumbai as a Location Fourteen million people live in the
city of Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. If the wider metropolitan
area is included, the figure is close on 18 million. Mumbai is the
financial and economic centre of India and home of the indian textile
industry. It is the capital of the State of Maharashtra and also the
subcontinent's most important port. Ten percent of India's industrial
workers are to be found in the city, and forty percent of India's
foreign trade is handled here. Mumbai is a transport hub and a city of
culture, boasting universities, museums, theatre and galleries. Two of
the city's monuments - the Chhatraphathi Shivaji Terminus and the
Elephants Caves - are on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
